Tubb Canyon Ranch is composed of approximately 80 acres of private trails, archeological sites, views of the Santa Rosa Mountains and Kay Mountain, a natural spring, a large ranch house, extensive cactus gardens, a barn, and a swimming pool. There are bighorn sheep, foxes, and bobcats as well as many rare cactus, acacia, and ironwood trees, all within a ten-minute drive of downtown Borrego Springs, California.
Natural History: Far up in the canyon, you can rest under the palm oasis of a natural spring. From there, you can wander for days among labyrinths of giant boulders, rare cactus, and ancient ocotillos. This property is also home to bighorn sheep, bobcats, foxes, coyote, quail, owls, roadrunners, and many other fascinating plants and animals. The Canyon also features a veritable forest of desert ironwood trees, some of which are extremely large and old.
Ancient History: The land surrounding Tubb Canyon Ranch was inhabited by Native American groups for perhaps thousands of years, as is evidenced by the - dozens of metates and grinding stones that can be found on the boulders around the spring. While hiking you can also find pottery shards, small obsidian knifes, and arrowheads in the fields and along the trails.
Recent History: In the late 19th century, Tubb Canyon was occasionally used to bring cattle into the desert from the famous Warner Ranch. It was also used as a postal route. In the early 20th century, a home was built on the property by a man who herded goats and later grew tomatoes. In the 1950's the property was purchased by Hollywood star Gale Gordon, whose shows included Our Miss Brooks and The Lucy Show. Lucille Ball, James Arnez, and other stars were regular guests at the ranch.
The Home: The home has a large footprint, lots of character, beautiful antique details and a gorgeous setting. - There are portions of the home that are reminiscent of a Spanish Mission, with thick plastered walls and terracotta flooring.
